As an aspiring author, it is vital that you know your readers. By identifying your target market, you can determine how to promote your works effectively to the people who are most likely to purchase your books. Conducting market research can serve as an effective means of achieving this aim.

When carrying out this research, break your market down into sub-segments in order to paint a specific picture of your average reader. One category you may wish to look at is region, as reading rates are higher in certain regions than others. You may be interested to learn that Amazon has just released their latest annual 20 most ‘well-read’ cities in America research.

Well-read cities

An article from Good Reads, a publishing industry portal, revealed the methodology behind Amazon’s study. The book e-commerce platform determined these rankings by gathering sales data from cities with over 500,000 residents. Amazon calculated its results on a per capita basis, including all book magazine and newspaper purchases executed between April 2015 and April 2016.

According to the study, Seattle, Washington is the most well-read city in America. This is the second consecutive year that the Pacific-coast city has claimed this honour. Seattle was followed by nearby Portland, Oregon and the nation’s capital Washington D.C. at second and third respectively. San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas rounded out the top five.

Deeper analysis

In terms of states, California was the most well-read region in America. Three cities from the Golden State featured in the top 20 this year, with San Diego and San Jose joining San Francisco at tenth and 14th respectively. We should also note that as well as topping the rankings, Seattle recorded the most sales of all books, newspapers and magazines in both print and Kindle forms.

Amazon also revealed which books are popular across various US cities. The Girl on the Train, a psychological thriller, was the best-selling print and Kindle title in five of the top ten cities. Meanwhile self-help publication The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing was the top-selling book in four of the remaining top ten cities. Amazon also found that adult colouring books were among the best-selling print titles in four of the top ten cities.

Utilising consumer data

With this data, you can determine current American reading trends. For instance, the citizens of Seattle engage with the written word at a higher rate than anyone else across the US. Considering the fact that The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up was the best-selling book in the city this year, evidence suggests that self-help is a popular genre in Seattle right now. These kinds of observations can help you ensure that you develop a targeted approach to marketing your next book.
